Bible Journey: Signs and Continuity

by Reed on Jan.07, 2008, under Uncategorized

Psalm 4:6-7 – Some only find happiness in signs of abundance that appear before their eyes; others, like David, can also find happiness in the absence of signs because of the presence of God in their heart.

In my Genesis readings of the past two days I also found great encouragement given our continuity with Abraham. He was the one who’s call was to be a blessing to the world (Genesis 12:1-3). That was his mission, and it is ours as well. He brought his mission by being the father of the nation out of which Jesus would come and bless all nations. Our mission is to be a blessing in our daily lives (as Jesus was) and to share Him with all nations. With regard to blessing, our continuity with Abraham is centered on Christ – even though Abraham lived eighteen hundred years before Jesus was born!

But there’s more continuity to come! Just as Abraham’s faith and trust in God was counted to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6), so our faith and trust in Christ is counted as such as well (Galatians 3:6). What’s more, Jesus’ disciples are called Abraham’s sons and daughters through our connection with His seed, Jesus (Galatians 3:7).

I never cease to be amazed at the working of God over the centuries and how the whole of scripture looks to Jesus!
