Bible Journey: The God Who Sees

When I was younger the thought that God might be watching was an idea I didn’t find much comfort in. The reason for this was that I thought of God as a sort of Santa Claus in the sky keeping track of my life so that he could determine if I should receive a lump of coal for the day or something more pleasant. But this morning as I read verses like Genesis 16:13, Psalm 6:9, and Matthew 6:30-34 I am reminded of the great comfort that comes precisely because God is watching!
I see this in the passage in Genesis. It is about a woman named Hagar who was abused by her master, driven away from the place of safety she once knew, and who felt utterly alone. But – I love that little word – but God saw her. He knew of her situation and gave her hope in his nearness. And in response, she says:
So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,” for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.”
Lord, help me to be more aware – and more thankful – that you are the one who looks after me!
