Bible Journey: Intentionality
by Reed on Jan.14, 2008, under Thoughts
This morning I read something that really challenged me:
Those who devise good meet steadfast love and faithfulness (Proverbs 14:22).
Specifically, I was challenged by the call to be personally invested and proactive in doing good, rather than simply being served up opportunities to do so. In essence, I needed to ask a question: How often have I sat down to devise a plan – that is, to spend significant mental energy – to bring good into my world through my life and resources?
The answer…not often! With the exception of the planning I do for the church, I am far too passive in this regard.
This is unacceptable given that there are so many other places in my life where I could devise a plan to bring good into the world. I could do so in my relationship with my wife. I could do so in my relationship with my children. I could do so in my friendships, and business, and community. The point is not that I lack opportunity, but rather that I lack intentionality.
Lord, help me to use the brain you’ve given me to bring good into others’ lives intentionally. Please give me insight into what would make a significant difference in the lives around me and the character I need to follow through on the plans that will be devised. I trust that as I give of myself in this way, I will know your steadfast love and faithfulness…as will those I serve with the plans you help me devise.
