Pillars for His Temple

by Reed on Jan.24, 2008, under Thoughts

Shortly after I wrote about how God is with us even in the hard times (here), I came across this quote:

Wherever souls are being tried and ripened, in whatever commonplace and homely way, there God is hewing out the pillars for his temple. Phillips Brooks (1835-1893), “The Pillar in God’s Temple” (source)

What a beautiful picture of how God works through our difficult times. In our struggles, God is fashioning a people who bring glory to him and hope to the world! I may just have to use the verses behind this quote (1 Peter 2:4-5) in my message this weekend.

I love the imagery of God hewing pillars of each of us.

When we discuss God’s work in and through our troubles I think it’s important to keep alive the perspective that is at the center of 1 Peter and Brooks’ quote: God is not the source of our troubles and afflictions. The world has plenty of those and we’ll find them without even trying to. But our loving and redeeming God rescues us from the wreckage and pain that comes from living in the world, and refines us.

It’s easy to be like Job and ask God “Why?” when suffering comes. But I think God really wants us to simply say “Help me.”
