Ultimate Healing: Discussion

by Reed on Jan.28, 2008, under Thoughts

It’s really hard to write when your kids are in the background talking about how they are going to tell on each other. Now that I’ve written that, I wonder if I just told on them? Anyway…

Last weekend in my message I made the statement that healing comes through sacrifice. When Jesus gave his life on the cross, healing and restoration entered the world in a matchless way. It is through his sacrifice that we are healed.

But how does this healing enter our own life? My contention was that ultimate healing comes through a sacrificial confession (giving our lives to Jesus as Lord) and through ongoing sacrificial attitudes and actions toward others. My questions for you, in anticipation for what I’ll write in AfterWORD when my sermon is posted to the ‘net, are:

  • How have you found ongoing sacrifice for others healing to your soul?
  • If you haven’t, how has it been destructive?
  • If it is a mixed bag (sometimes healing, sometimes destructive) why is this the case? What factors determine this?

Thanks, in advance, for your thoughts…

okay – this is hard to write out loud but here goes. I knew taking care of my mom would, on many levels be challenging and it has. I was the kid that gave my mom the most angst while growing up so I think this is just on many levels. I have learned to love her so much more than I ever did before having her move in with us. It has been healing for both of us I believe. God showed me one day that when I was embarrassed of her, avoided her and just not there for her as much as I should have been that I was doing it to Jesus too. We hear so often that verse that says in as much as you do it to one of the least of these you do it to me also and we think we get that – I did – but not until he showed me that about my mom did I really get it. Wow! What a wake up! I was very ashamed and asked for forgiveness and try to respect and treat my mom with as much love as I can.
I am being healed more and more every day by washing her, loving her, respecting her, putting her ahead of myself most of the time. I thank God for the mother He gave me and that He has given me this time with her.

    Hi Sharon,

Thanks for your response. I so appreciate your perspective on how you are “…being healed more and more every day by…” Very heartwarming.

And the thought about the least of these is important…and I hadn’t considered it. It seems to be the case that as we serve others, we are also in the presence of Christ, which is healing in itself, of course. Which touches on something I will write on in the AfterWORD for the message.

I am also so thankful that the time you have been given with your mom has not only changed your perspectives on the past (which is itself healing) but also on your present and future with her.
